Brief History of the Unit
PLDG was a unit based out of Ottawa and the surrounding area. They were activated for overseas service on January 26, 1941, as part of the 1st Division as light armour reconnaissance. Their main theatres of operation were in Italy and Northwest Europe. On July 13,1944, they were reassigned to the 5th Division as infantry, where they once again proved their courage and tenacity as scouts, and very capable infantry. During this time, the main forces fought were the Fallschirmjager as well as regular German infantry formations. On March 15,1945, they returned to the role of armoured reconnaissance, and remained in the 5th Canadian Armoured Division. The PLDG was moved to supplementary service on February 12, 1965.
